Answers to common questions about the Renoster team and our nature-based carbon project ratings
Renoster is a technology company that creates software and data platforms for the carbon markets. We believe that Deep Transparency is the solution to many of the market’s existing problems. We also believe in a future where carbon credits help preserve and restore nature for generations to come.
Our team is comprised of high integrity forest carbon scientists, economists, software developers, operators, designers and customer-facing roles. Our diverse team hails from across the globe, united by a deep passion for nature and commitment to climate action.
Our customers are among the most forward thinking companies in the voluntary carbon markets. They value having high-quality carbon portfolios, and include multinational banks, logistics companies, cosmetics brands, carbon marketplaces, and financial institutions.
Our technology takes an open-science, remote-sensing approach to quantitatively assess the climate impact of nature-based carbon projects around the world. We leverage publicly available satellite data from NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Japanese Space Agency as well as commercially available data to conduct our analyses. We conduct our reviews according to both qualitative and quantitative evaluations of a project against our publicly available rubrics.
We only rate nature-based carbon projects. Here is a list of project types we are able to conduct due diligence on:
- Avoided Deforestation (including but not limited to REDD+)
- Improved Forest Management
- Afforestation / Reforestation
- Mangroves
- Avoided Conversion of Peatlands
- Woody Biomass Burial / Biochar
Here are some examples of projects we do not rate:
- Direct Air Capture
- Cookstoves
- Renewables
- Soil carbon
- Agroforestry
- Blue carbon from kelp/algae
- Waste manage / landfill gas
We only rate nature-based carbon projects because we require independent data sources about project activities outside of what is provided by registries. We rely on more than 40 years of satellite imagery for nature-based carbon projects to help us do this, but similar data is not available for renewables, cookstoves, landfill gas, direct air capture etc. projects. The means that we cannot independently verify project claims, and as such, cannot give a rating for such projects.
